Access restrictions at Murdoch

Where access restriction has been applied, if a link is selected, then a login prompt will usually display. In many cases, however, where there is an existing login session, login persistence may occur.

computer_990000_37x30.png Authentication (who are you?)

For authentication, login requires a valid username and password. The usual combination for login at Murdoch is a Murdoch Username and Murdoch Password. Access to a login screen is provided via a Secure Web Server to ensure that a password passed from a Web browser to a Web Server is encrypted.

There are Web Servers on campus that use Microsoft Windows Authentication. Where access to a resource is restricted via Windows Authentication, the URL for a link to that resource may not use a Secure Web Server. Any concerns about the security of a Murdoch Password should be raised with the IT Service Desk on (08) 9360 2000.

In addition to authentication, access to restricted information resources, application systems and services may require a level of authorisation. Authorisation may limit who may view information, or complete an online activity or function, or use an application system to enter data.

The authorisation process may confirm one or more of the following:

  • that a person is a member of a valid MAIS Group (eg. 'staff', 'students', 'MAIS Others')
  • that a person (or a position) has a particular MAIS Authority Type associated with their entry in the MAIS database.

Alternatively, the authorisation process may confirm that a person has been assigned membership of an Active Directory Authority Group.

Before selecting a link to an information resource, an application system, or a service that has had access restriction applied, it is recommended that this facility be used first.

Check that your Murdoch Password is valid

Any problems with login should not then be related to the password used.

Murdoch Password reticulation

When a password is changed, the changed password is reticulated from the MAIS database to other systems and services, including the University's Microsoft Active Directory. For more information on use of the Murdoch Password for Login for Systems & Services at Murdoch, and for details on Login Synchronisation, refer to information on Login at Murdoch.

Access restriction methods

The two most commonly used methods to apply access restrictions at Murdoch are:

why_murdoch_990000_37x30.png Active Directory (AD) Access Restriction

Requiring only login at a workstation on campus, or via VPN, or requiring login at a login screen.

For example: My Library, MyHR, Webmail (staff).

Requiring MAIS Login, at a MAIS Login screen.

For example: MyMurdoch (including MyUnits, MyInfo and MyAnswers), Webmail (students).

Some systems and services are hosted externally and use MAIS Access Restriction (eg. CareerConnect, Gartner Portal and the Travel Management System (Trobexis).
