Murdoch Username

The Murdoch Username is an identification number, either a Staff Number, a Student Number, or a MAIS Person Number, that is held in the MAIS database for use with authentication systems at Murdoch University. This username is most commonly used, in combination with the Murdoch Password, at a login screen for access to the University's computing and network facilities, and for access to restricted information resources, application systems and services provided by, or for, Murdoch University.

Where access restriction has been applied, in most cases, a login screen will display. For example, when a resource that has been restricted via the Murdoch Authentication & Idenfication System (MAIS) is selected, the MAIS Login screen prompts for a Murdoch Username and Murdoch Password.

For those persons who are a member of more than one group, for example they are both a staff member AND a student of the University, there will be two Murdoch Usernames. The correct Murdoch Username will need to be used for access to different systems and services.

The Murdoch Username for students of Murdoch University is their Student Number as used in the Student Management System. The Student Number has eight numeric characters within the following ranges:

  • 12,000,001 --> 19,999,999
  • 22,000,001 --> 99,999,999

Students who do not know their Student Number need to seek assistance from one of the following:

The Murdoch Username for staff of Murdoch University is their Staff Number as used in the Human Resources Information System. The username may be a numeric sequence of characters, or alphanumeric, depending upon the year at which a staff member was first employed by Murdoch University.

The format for Staff Numbers in the Human Resources Information System is:

SnnnnnnA (1999 and prior)

Starts with upper case S, then 6 numeric characters, then ends with uppercase alpha character A-Z

nnnnnnnn (2000 - )

8 numeric characters starting from 20001000

Before the year 2000
For example:

S730099Z s730099z s730099Z S730099z

are all valid.

NOTE: Do not use prefixes other than 'S'

After 2000
For example:

20001019

Persons who are neither staff of Murdoch University, nor students of Murdoch University, but who have some formal association with Murdoch University that requires them to have an entry in the MAIS database, are referred to as MAIS Others.

The identification number held in the MAIS database as the Murdoch Username for a MAIS Other is their MAIS Person Number.

For example, contract staff, or consultants, who are not recorded in the Human Resources Information System, may require access to the University's computing and network facilities.
