Thelma Balyeat Memorial Scholarship for Women

The Thelma Balyeat Memorial Scholarship for Women was established in 2005 by a former Murdoch Professor of Economics, Dr Dirck Ditwiler, to enhance the opportunities for mature age women students over 30 years old who are studying towards a degree in the following disciplines:

  • Arts & Global Issus (Media & Public Policy)
  • Business
  • Information Technology

In 2015, Murdoch University received a gift in Dr Ditwiler’s estate to increase the value of the Thelma Balyeat Memorial Scholarship in perpetuity.


One scholarship is available




Open: Monday 1st October 2018
Closes: Monday 4th March 2019, 4.00pm (Australian WST)


Two $1,250 instalments in Week 7 or 8 of Semester 1 and Semester 2.


To apply for this scholarship you must:

  • Be a woman aged 30 years or over
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit points or more
  • Be studying an undergraduate degree at Murdoch University in an above mentioned discipline.
  • Be experiencing personal and financial hardship
  • Be an Australian citizen

How to apply

1 Download and save the application form.
2 Complete the form and save it under your name.
3 Email the following documents to
  • Completed application form
  • A personal statement of no more than 300 words
  • Evidence of financial hardship (e.g. Payslips, Tax Notice of Assessment or Centrelink Income Statement)
  • Evidence of personal hardship
